Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

Origins: Glasgow, Scotland
They play since: 2001
Other discs: Franz Ferdinand (2004), You Could it Have it so Much Better (2005)

Disc Review:
Franz Ferdinand is a Scottish band that appeared at the beggining of the last decade with great success with their debut album: Franz Ferdinand, specially with their first single: Take Me Out.

This time, the scotsmen bring a new sound with "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand", a conceptual album based around a night of partying, and the minor effects after. Beggining with the fantastic "Ullysses" which was the first single of the album too, the musics goes trought a dark sound with a lot of electronical complements emulating the chaos of the night. The music base is very well worked, with a great combination of sounds and the productions lefts nothing to ask for.

Summing up, this music fits perfect on the way to a party, or on the way back home. I hope this guys bring us more works like this.

Tick Toper - Tick Toper

Origins: San Pedro, Argentina

Disc review:
The disc starts with the instrumental Power Pelos that could perfectly fit in a theater play about spaceships and aliens. The music and the lyrics melodies, kind of reminds me to the Arctic Monkeys, in the Humbug times, because of the sight dark tones, that this guys try to bring up.
As they are an Indie band, the sounds of the insturments combine bringing as an excellent result, a loud and messy sound which is present in the whole, 16 minutes long, EP.
If you are making an Independient cinematic production about aliens, this is your soundtrack.

Albert Hammond Jr. - Yours to Keep

Origins: Los Angeles, Unided States of America
They play since: 2006
Other discs: ¿Como te Llama? (2008)

Disc Review:
Albert was the second guitar from The Strokes, an american band with great impact in music in the middle 2000's. He colaborated with many of the lyrics of their songs.

This is his first solist disc, a product of the work on many of the sketches of songs he had and couldn't achieve to produce with The Strokes. The lyrics are most about life and love, but from an urban point of view, following the style of his last band. The music is based on loud guitars, catchy riffs, and short solos.

The music base it's quite simple, but he made a lot of work over that base, adding more sounds to finally achieve a great sound to go with the processed voice he chooses to show.
To summit, its a great disk to listen to a sunday afternoon when you have nothing to do and want to relax on your couch.

El Mató a un Policía Motorizado - Día de los Muertos

Origins: La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina
They play since: 2003
Other discs: El Mató a un Policía Motorizado (2004), Navidad de Reserva (2005), Un Millón de Euros (2006)

Disc Review:
This is a band which I personally appreciate more than the rest of the groups, because I feel a sort of emphaty with their music, which is really basic and, like it's genre demmands: noisy.

This is the final disk of a trilogy based on the life cycle; the birth (Navidad de Reserva), the life (Un Millón de Euros) and finally, the death, which is the main theme of this EP. Its lyrics talk about the end of the days, the apocalypse and natural disasters, creating some kind of psychedelia mixed with a thetric desolation atmosphere. The song I liked the most was "El Día del Huracán" which, like it names says, talks about an upcomming hurricane that's going to destroy everything..

The music is composed by basic chord progressions with a strong and raw distrotion, and electric riffs, and the voice varies from melancholic to angry melodies. The whole band sounds like one and that's what made me post this here.

Arctic Monkeys - Suck it and See

Origins:

Origins: Sheffield, England
They play since: 2002
Other Discs: Whatever People Says I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009)

Disc Review:
The last album of the Arctic Monkeys, the english band that has built a great success the last half of decade.

The album has a great difference with Humbug, wich had a darker ambient, and more dark lyrics. This one, instead, is more happy, with soft ballads, and more sweet lyrics.
This album is a proove that the band has make a change through the years, starting with loud and full of distortion songs in "Whatever People Says I Am, That's What I'm Not", using more technical riffs on "Favourite Worst Nightmare", coming through a dark step in "Humbug", and finally achieving this kind of "swing" style. A proove of this is "Piledriver Waltz" the track that Alex Turner wrote for the movie "Submarine" and the band recorded for this cd.

In resume, the disc is great, showing the multiple faces of this great band, that promises to keep this fantastic progress, and stills winning listeners from all over the world.

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

Origins: Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States
They play since: 2011
Other discs: Gulag Orkestar (2006), The Flying Club Cup (2007)

Disc review:
Well, I discovered this band clicking videos randomly, and I had a very good first impression. The first song I heard was "Santa Fe" and five minutes after I was downloading the album.

The music it's kind of performed bv a sort orchesta, a combination of diferent sounds, from polkas, to mexican trumpeth bands, and the choruses are very good maintained by it's vocalist, Zach Condom.

The lyrics are very poetic, making a nice combination with the particular way to sing of Condom. Although the first songs are more pop styled (using an electronic keyboard), the next ones, and the older albums' ones, are performed by a big variation of instruments, including violins, guitars, accordions and different percussions.

In resume, I find Beirut, as a perfect band for a relaxation day, a quiet moment, or as a background music for a quiet activity.

Fog Digging Sessions - Post Hummus

 Origins: Luxemburg, Luxemburg
 They play since: 2009
Other discs: This is the first one

Disc review:
You may ask how did I hear of this band from such an exotic country... Well, I have, thanks to a friend who has a great music blog of the albums that came on scene in this 2012. I saw the review, and I liked what I read, so, thanks to my impulsive habits, I downloaded the whole album.

Now, coming back to the music. The album is a great mix of weirdness, that's the fullest review I can give. A combination of psichodelic 60's music in some songs, with electropop songs with a bit of dubstep in them. What can I say, a mindblowing combination.
It's not a powerful album, but it's chaotic indeed; looks like the songs weren't diagrammed, and everyone did what the wanted, and that fact makes it even more cooler.

Funny fact: As a kind of testament, on the band's bandcamp wall, they wrote all the principles they would follow before entering to the studio, including these:

  • Every track recorded live.
  • No premeditated ideas.
  • All lyrics based on recent events.
  • Walk in the studio with nothing but their hats and get straight to it.
